Whispers from the Mountains and Waters: A Complete Collection of Myths, Legends, Folklore, and Oral Traditions of Bosnia and Herzegovina :

The mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina are not just stone and snow. They remember. The rivers do not simply flow to the sea , they carry everything that has ever happened on their banks. And the dead do not leave. They change address.Whispers from the Mountains and Waters is an original literary reconstruction of the mythological world of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a tradition that layers Illyrian animism beneath Slavic paganism beneath Bogomil Christianity beneath Ottoman mysticism, and emerges from all of it still fundamentally itself, still asking the same questions it has always asked: What is this place? Who does it really belong to? What do we owe the water?Meet the vile , fairy women who sing on mountain springs and whose voices permanently alter the hearing of anyone who listens. The aždaha, a dragon that does not attack with force but with persuasion, finding the specific fear inside each person and speaking directly to it. The Zmaj od Bosne,a dragon that did not abandon the country when the medieval kingdom fell, but flew into the mountains and has never left. Heroes who refuse paradise. Healers who diagnose illness by listening to the river. The dead who return not out of malice but because something important was left unsaid. This is not an academic study. There are no footnotes, no arguments with other scholars, no claims to resolve questions that have been debated for centuries. This is a book to be read by firelight, with a mountain in the window — an invitation to pay attention to a landscape that has been paying attention to us for a very long time.
