STORM

Nafula, whose name means rainfall, is a popular and sociable village beauty in love with John, a graduate of a tertiary institution. Over the previous years villagers have been saving with a land-buying company to buy the piece of land they are living on. Some, however, have not been able to raise the required sums on time. They now face a real threat of eviction in the next few weeks. At the same time there is a perennial row involving squatters and landlords not far from the village. One of Nafula's sisters goes to visit their relatives, one of the squatter families and is short dead during a stormy confrontation between police and squatters. Now that Nafula is bereaved the entire village is mourning too. The story dissects the hope and despair of a typical village in the immediate period after independence; addressing class, land, family, love and history.
