Zymē and Other Sermons

These sermons are an invitation to take Christian preaching seriously in light of the daunting and disconcerting questions that dangle human life over an abyss of mystery: Who are we? Where are we? Why are we here? What is real? What is to become of us? What should we be doing?

Answers garnered from the world on one's own never reach the ultimate truth those questions demand. Consequently, some people lead lives haunted by separation from ultimate truth, while others so busy themselves with what they do know that they muffle any concern for truth beyond that. This sermon collection belongs to a third way of dealing with ultimate truth while living with unsearchable mystery, namely that of preaching.

Preaching is the church's way of confronting people with ultimate truth by sermonically bringing to word the guidance, grace, love, and courage revealed in the world by God through the life, mission, and history of Jesus Christ. The sermons collected here are offered as moments in that history--moments when, amidst ever-changing times and circumstances, the light of truth is cast, crucial understanding is kindled, and humbly bold response is evoked.
