What Walks at Wildfell

When a young widow and her son take rooms in the crumbling Wildfell Hall, the district decides she is proud, secretive, and too strange with her boy by half. They are not wrong that she is hiding something. They are only wrong about what.

In the diary she finally surrenders, Helen tells the truth she has carried alone: that she married a beautiful, dissolute man certain she could save him, and watched, year by year, as something patient moved into him through the bottle and began to hollow him out. It fed on his ruin. It was teaching her son to hunger the same way. And it was waiting for the smaller life to grow ripe.

You know how faithfully this story keeps to Anne Brontë. You do not yet know what has been drawn out from under it, or why a mother would wall herself and her child in a cold ruined hall and call it safety. Some thirsts are not your own. One of them is patient. It will not stay in the grave if a single door is left open.
