In January 1945, hundreds of starving Jewish boys arrived at Buchenwald concentration camp after surviving Auschwitz and the brutal winter death marches. Most had lost their entire families. Most had nothing left.
But inside Buchenwald, a Czech prisoner named Antonin Kalina was waiting.
Using false registration records, a typhus sign on the door, and six years of quiet influence inside the prisoner underground, Kalina gathered over 900 boys into a single barrack - Block 66 - and kept the SS out. He exempted the boys from forced labour. He organised extra food. He registered Jewish children as political prisoners so they could not be taken away.
When American forces liberated Buchenwald on April 11, 1945, they found 904 children alive. It was one of the most unexpected discoveries of the entire war.
Kalina went home after the war and said nothing. He died in 1990, unknown to the world. For decades, the boys he saved built their lives in Israel, America, and Australia - and never forgot the man who gave those lives back to them.
This is the story they finally told.
What Number Did They Give You? is a deeply researched, human account of the Holocaust's most remarkable act of quiet courage - told through the eyes of the children who lived it and the one man who refused to look away.
