Volunteers at the Frontline

With over 100 million people forcibly displaced and humanitarian needs at an all-time high, volunteers have become the invisible backbone of global crisis response. They are often the first to arrive and the last to leave-yet they remain underfunded, undertrained, and undervalued. Volunteers at the Frontline challenges the assumption that volunteerism is merely a stopgap. Drawing on five diverse case studies-from the Lebanese Civil War and Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar to youth exchanges in Nepal, refugee-led initiatives in Uganda, and British Red Cross operations-this book offers a comprehensive analysis of voluntary humanitarian action. Blending theoretical frameworks with real-world evidence, Md Abdullah Al Noman examines the motivations, institutional dynamics, and policy challenges that shape volunteer engagement. The book argues that volunteers are not just a supplementary resource but a foundational pillar of effective, principled, and sustainable humanitarian response. Essential reading for humanitarian practitioners, policymakers, donors, and scholars, this volume provides actionable recommendations for strengthening volunteer systems, protecting volunteer wellbeing, and building more resilient communities in an era of unprecedented crisis.
