Synopsis
Vita Mia is a high-stakes commercial thriller that explores the darker edges of human nature, obsessive love, drug-fuelled delusion, and the insidious power of cult control. At its heart, it is also an empowering coming-of-age story about sisterhood, survival, and the strength forged through trauma.
Twins, Mia and Gabby Rossi share a small apartment in Bondi, Australia. They are bound together by grief after the suicide of their mother, Alessia, and a childhood marked by estrangement from their father, Sam. To Mia, their bond is unbreakable.
Until Gabby disappears.
At first, everyone assumes impulsive, free-spirited Gabby has taken off on another adventure. But Mia knows something is wrong. Gabby's phone and belongings have been left behind, and the messages Mia receives, supposedly from her sister, feel wrong. As Mia digs deeper, she uncovers a terrifying truth: Gabby has followed her secret lover, Calian, to his isolated community in the Daintree Rainforest.
What Gabby doesn't know is that Calian was once Alessia's lover too. Years earlier, Alessia escaped him with her life, but not with her sanity. Calian never released his obsession, and now he has found Alessia again, or so he believes.
When police dismiss Mia's fears, she travels north alone. Hidden deep in the rainforest, she discovers Calian's off-grid commune, ruled through fear, drugs, indoctrination, and Calian's belief that he is a living god. Gabby, like the others, has fallen under his spell.
Mia's attempt to rescue her sister backfires when she is captured. Trapped inside the commune, she learns the extent of Calian's delusion: he believes Gabby is the reincarnation of Alessia. Mia also discovers Calian has murdered his own mother. Mia uncovers another devastating truth, her father Sam was raised in the same cult as Calian, and both men were with Alessia on the day she died.
Calian brutally attacks Sam and leaves him for dead in the rainforest, then disappears with his followers, keeping Gabby hidden. With the help of Ariel, a pregnant and disillusioned cult member, Mia escapes and leads police back to the compound, only to find it abandoned.
Refusing to give up, Mia searches the rainforest and finds Gabby and Sam drugged, injured, and left to die. She gets them home, but another betrayal surfaces: Sam withheld Alessia's final suicide note from the girls, shattering Mia's trust once more.
As the sisters begin to heal, Calian resurfaces. With no official identity, he stalks them freely, claiming ownership of Gabby and vowing to kill them both.
Mia decides to end it. On the anniversary of her mother's death, she returns to Alessia's grave, knowing Calian will come. When he does, Mia, wearing a wire, lures him to confess to decades of murder, rape, trafficking, and psychological abuse. Police move in. Calian is finally arrested.
Vita Mia is a story of resilience, the lasting impact of suicide, and the unbreakable bond between sisters. It shows the extraordinary strength found when confronting the darkest parts of the past, and the power of survival when everything you love is at stake.
