Unbound Elegance -Chinese Women in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1900-1960《不羁的优雅》

This volume serves as the catalogue for the exhibition Unbound Elegance: Chinese Women in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1900-1960. Centered on twenty-one qipaos dating from the 1930s to the 1960s, the exhibition draws upon embroidered bound-foot shoes, hairstyle albums, immigration maps, family photograph albums, historical documents, and other material objects to reconstruct the history of Chinese women in the San Francisco Bay Area from the late Qing dynasty to the mid-twentieth century. Inspired by the concept of "Curatorial Activism," the exhibition seeks to bring Chinese women-long marginalized or overlooked in mainstream narratives of immigration history-back into the center of historical discourse. Through their stories, it explores how they moved from the era of footbinding into modern society, crossed the Pacific to the United States, and established families, preserved cultural traditions, and reshaped their identities amid exclusion laws, racial discrimination, and cultural negotiation.

The exhibition is organized into three sections. The first, Bound Bodies: Footbinding, Beauty, and Female Destiny, examines how the practice of footbinding shaped Chinese women's understanding of the body, beauty, and social identity, and how they lived within, adapted to, and ultimately challenged this system. The second, Across the Pacific: From "Extermination" to Rebirth, explores the racial prejudice, exclusionary legislation, and social barriers Chinese women encountered in the United States, as well as their efforts to build families, sustain communities, and claim a place for themselves in an unfamiliar society. The third, The Power of Elegance: Qipao, Identity, and the Modern Chinese Woman, uses the stories of twenty-one qipaos to illustrate how Chinese women redefined themselves through modernization, migration, and cultural transformation, creating new identities that combined tradition and modernity, East and West.

The title Unbound Elegance carries a meaning beyond the beauty of dress. "Elegance" refers not merely to outward appearance, but to the ability to maintain dignity in the face of historical pressures-a strength that enabled women to remain true to themselves amid bodily constraints, racial discrimination, and cultural conflict. "Unbound," meanwhile, signifies the continual transcendence of such constraints: from bound feet to liberated steps, from exclusion to belonging, and from silence to self-expression.

From the villages of Guangdong to the San Francisco Bay Area, from embroidered slippers to qipaos, from subjects written into history to individuals actively shaping it, these women crossed not only an ocean but an era. Most left behind no books, entered few archives, and rarely appeared in textbooks. Yet they helped shape the history of the Chinese American community in the Bay Area. This exhibition-and this volume-is dedicated to them.

《不羁的优雅：1900-1960年旧金山湾区华人女性》为同名展览图录。全书以二十一件1930至1960年代旗袍为核心，结合绣花鞋、家族相册、移民档案及历史文献，重现晚清至二十世纪中叶旧金山湾区华人女性的生活与历史。

受"策展行动主义"（Curatorial Activism）理念启发，本书将长期被主流移民史忽视的华人女性重新带回历史叙事中心，讲述她们如何从缠足时代走向现代社会，跨越太平洋来到美国，并在排华法案、种族歧视与文化变迁之中建立家庭、延续传统、重塑身份。
