The Troubled Night by Liverson Mdongo is a compelling story of migration, survival and shattered dreams, told through the journey of Baledzi, a young village woman who leaves her home in Zimbabwe in search of a better life in Johannesburg, the fabled City of Gold. Driven by poverty, family responsibility and the hope of transforming her future, Baledzi undertakes a dangerous journey across the Limpopo River, where she encounters violence, exploitation and death. The journey becomes a brutal initiation into a world in which desperation is frequently exploited by those with power. When she finally reaches Johannesburg, her expectations collide with the harsh reality of Hillbrow: overcrowding, crime, poverty, corruption and indifference. Robbed almost immediately after arriving, Baledzi discovers that crossing the border was only the beginning of her struggle.

As Baledzi attempts to build a new life, she is gradually drawn into a complicated world of survival, criminality and moral compromise.
