The Night of the Crows

Some visions choose you. The crows make sure you never forget.
When college freshman Alex agrees to drive a visiting medicine man to his professor's new home in the Texas borderlands, he expects nothing more than an errand after class. Instead, a stretch of empty highway fills with crows, a fallen bird is lifted to the sky in prayer, and Chief Reymundo Tigre Perez tells him, without ceremony, that he has been chosen.
What follows is a night of fire, prophecy, and promise-the Sun Dance, the sacred land of Mescalito, and the first steps on the path of the shaman. Then, almost as suddenly as it arrived, that path is taken from him.
Years later, a drumming circle and a vision ask Alex the question he has spent a lifetime avoiding: what happens to a calling when you let yourself forget it-and are the crows that chose you still waiting?
