Seventeen-year-old Dami Nwosu watches a jury convict her mother of murdering an elderly resident at Tern House, the care home where Calla worked nights.

Isla, Beatrice's granddaughter, must reconsider the testimony she gave in court and the family loyalty that shaped it. Marion is determined to protect her mother, June, whose fractured memory may still contain crucial details. Helen, a retired court usher, has preserved the difference between what the trial established and what it merely assumed. And Viv, a care-home manager, has concealed records while persuading herself that she was protecting residents, staff and the institution itself.

At the centre of them all is Ruth Fenton, Beatrice's publicly admired daughter, whose carefully managed grief conceals private conflicts and dangerous secrets.
