The Closet Game has been passed between children for generations - a whispered dare, a set of rules, a name nobody says too loudly. Most children grow up and forget it. Some do not grow up at all.

Eleven-year-old Nora Bell has spent her life keeping her four-year-old sister Wren away from the game. She knows the rules have teeth. She knows their grandmother Mara wedged every closet door open with folded grocery bags and called it a habit.
