Every year, we bring Ganapathy into our homes with devotion, joy, music, flowers, prayers, and celebration. We welcome the form with love, give it a place in our hearts, and spend days in its presence. Then, when the time comes, we carry that same form toward the water and immerse it.
At first, this may appear to be a story of creation and destruction. But perhaps it is something much deeper.
Ganapathy begins as clay-formless, silent, and full of possibility. Human hands shape the clay into a form we recognise and adore. For a few days, that form becomes part of our lives. We speak to it, pray before it, celebrate around it, and create memories with those we love. Then the form returns to the water, and the clay returns to nature.
Yet the meaning does not disappear with the form.
This simple cycle offers a profound mirror for human life. We too begin without a defined identity. Life shapes us through childhood, relationships, experiences, struggles, achievements, failures, love, loss, ageing, and countless choices. We grow into a form that the world recognises as ourselves. We gather possessions, memories, relationships, titles, responsibilities, and dreams. We hold tightly to them, sometimes forgetting that everything we can see and touch is temporary.
The ten days of Ganapathy can therefore be viewed as more than a festival. They can become a journey through our own existence.
From birth to wonder, from growth to wisdom, from relationships to struggle, from impermanence to ageing, from letting go to Visarjan, each day invites us to look inward and ask: What are we becoming? What truly matters? What are we holding on to? What are we afraid to release? And when our physical form is eventually gone, what will remain of the life we lived?
This book does not attempt to provide final answers. Instead, it invites reflection. Through conversations with Guruji, stories, questions, analogies, and the changing form of Ganapathy, we are invited to see familiar moments with new eyes.
The physical body is temporary, while the Atman-the deeper spiritual self-is understood as continuing beyond bodily existence. Visarjan therefore becomes a powerful symbol of transformation: the form changes, but the journey continues.
Perhaps that is the quiet lesson of clay.
We are shaped, we celebrate, we love, we struggle, we learn, we age, and eventually we return.
But while we are here, we have a choice about what we make of this brief and beautiful existence.
We are all clay in the hands of existence-shaped by life, returned to the earth, and carried onward by the mystery of the spirit.
