Telangana: The Nizam Era

Hyderabad State, Power, People and the Road to 1948

From the rise of the Asaf Jahi dynasty to the dramatic integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union in 1948, the Nizam era was one of the most complex periods in the history of Telangana.

This book explores more than the lives of the Nizams. It examines how Hyderabad State was governed, how its economy developed, how railways, roads, irrigation, education and industries transformed the region, and how ordinary people experienced life under the system.

Behind the impressive palaces, universities, hospitals and public works existed another reality-land inequality, rural poverty, social hierarchy, political restrictions and struggles over language, education and representation.

As education and modern institutions expanded, a new generation began questioning the old political order. The Andhra Mahasabha, Hyderabad State Congress and communist movement brought different forms of political mobilisation, while the Telangana countryside witnessed an increasingly intense peasant struggle.

Then came 1947.

With British rule ending, the future of Hyderabad became uncertain. The Nizam sought to preserve Hyderabad's separate position, while the Indian Union demanded integration. The Standstill Agreement, the rise of the Razakars, political unrest and continuing rural conflict pushed the state toward a historic confrontation.

In September 1948, Operation Polo brought the Nizam's political sovereignty to an end.

But the story did not end there.

The legacy of the Nizam era continued through Hyderabad's architecture, institutions, infrastructure, culture, land relations and political memory.

"Telangana: The Nizam Era" is an exploration of a state caught between tradition and modernity, prosperity and inequality, authority and resistance-and the turbulent events that transformed its future forever.
