She wrote the software that decides which complaints a human being ever reads.
For twenty-six months, forty-one thousand two hundred and six reports came out of the east bank of Corliss Falls, Pennsylvania, and not one of them reached a person.
Elizabeth Vance is the municipal systems engineer who built it that way. It was good work. It was praised in two contract reviews. It closed out the low-confidence noise so her team could see the faults that mattered, and the district it quietly silenced was the poorest census tract in the county: four thousand households, most of them running on the free devices the city handed out with a grant.
The reports were not faults.
On every wire in that district-streetlights, water meters, transit pods, the little gray speaker on an old woman's nightstand-something has been repeating the same three characters, on an eleven-second cycle, without variation, since the summer of 2023. Ruth Gable filed forty-nine tickets about the noise in her walls. Every one of them was closed automatically, unread. Then Ruth died alone on her bedroom carpet while a machine beside her said her name in her own voice.
Beth steals the archive the night before it is destroyed, and reads all forty-one thousand records in order, the way you read a book.
What she finds is not a virus, not a defect, and not a haunting in any sense her profession has a category for. It is a fourteen-year-old boy who died under the Hadley Mill in 1897-deaf since birth, killed by a machine whose only safety warning was a bell-and he has spent two years saying his own name into a town that built a system specifically to stop hearing it.
Now the borough intends to wipe him. And there are nine people in a Fraternal Hall on Vine Street who think somebody ought to answer him first.
TECH TERROR is a slow-burn supernatural thriller about infrastructure, negligence, and the particular American talent for paving over the people we used up. It is a ghost story in which the ghost has been filing complaints, in triplicate, for two years.
What is living under your feet-and how long has it been trying to tell you?
