Schoenberg's Ghost, Michael Glover's new collection of poetry, is a dramatic re-imagining of the life, character, and historical context of the Viennese composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). Many of them are spoken in the voice of Schoenberg himself. They are the work of Schoenberg's ghost.
These poems are an evocation of the tragedy, the tensions, and the fleeting triumphs of a man who so often found himself at odds with the music-loving audiences of Vienna. His dissonances appalled many. His modernity bewildered many of his profoundly conservative listeners. There were hisses and even fist-fights at his concerts. He wrote on, almost as if in defiance. He was not to be silenced.
As a teacher, he could be imperious, demanding, autocratic. Some of his pupils were worshipful, others less so. He was a traditionalist in spirit, and also an embodiment of modernity in all its challenges and excesses.
