Python From the Ground Up stops and explains. You write your first line of code in chapter 2. By chapter 3 you know exactly what happens between pressing Enter and seeing output: how Python compiles your file into bytecode, what that __pycache__ folder is for, and why a syntax error on line 40 stops line 1 from ever running.

Across fourteen chapters you build one program. It's called Shelf, it tracks the books you own, and it starts as a single line that prints a title. By the end it's a working application with a menu, saved data, search, sorting and classes. Every concept arrives at the point Shelf needs it, so you meet dictionaries at the moment a list stops being able to help.
