Après la mort soudaine de sa femme Otsu, Sanpei Okuda commence à vivre avec son fils et sa famille, un peu contraint.Cependant, alors qu'il éprouve encore des difficultés à cette nouvelle vie commune, il retrouve par hasard un "registre de la famille Okuda" laissé par sa femme.En décortiquant le "Registre de la famille Okuda", qui regorge de recettes pour la vie quotidienne, Sanpei apprend à s'occuper des tâches ménagères en tant qu'homme au foyer.À travers sa vie avec son fils unique Shiro, sa belle-fille Reika, ancienne fleuriste et sa petite-fille Nona, peu sociable et passionnée d'insectes, Sanpei se rend compte de la richesse et du caractère irremplaçable de la vie quotidienne ordinaire, qu'il avait jusqu'à présent négligée en la laissant entre les mains de sa femme.Le personnage principal Sanpei est appelé "San-san" par sa femme Otsu,Le titre de cette oeuvre "San-san-roku", signifie ainsi "Registre de San-san".
