With the Posse Comitatus Act in place, the nation can not bring to bear the full weight of the military to effect homeland security within the domestic borders. For most people, the origin of the Posse Comitatus Act is misunderstood. Posse comitatus, a tradition dating back to 13th century England, originates with the medieval practice of summoning a group of able bodied men to assist the King's sheriff in pursuing lawbreakers. A Latin term, posse comitatus translates to the "power of the county." By the 17th century, the tradition of forming a posse would make way for warrants and summons in England, but the tradition would carry over to the colonies and serve a vital role in establishing federal policing powers for a newly independent United States.
