The concept of this book is new in that it regards the mesothelial surface of the various viscera and body cavities as an organ within its own right. It gives an up-to-date account of the structure and function of the serosal membranes and describes in detail the pathophysiology of effusions in the body cavities in a variety of different diseases. The pathological conditions which primarily affect the pleura, pericardium, peritoneum and tunica vaginalis are described and their diagnostic problems discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the investigation of patients with suspected mesothelioma. The relationship of this tumour and other serosal diseases with asbestos exposure is dealt with in detail. A separate chapter is devoted to the biological effect of asbestos and of other mineral fibres on human and animal mesothelial tissues. This book aims to provide a practical aid to hospital pathologists and clinicians and is also intended to be of wider use to research workers in the many disciplines whose interests involve the mesothelium.
