My Husband's Autumn Coat

The first cold morning of October. I reach into my husband's coat for the school run.

In the pocket: a letter from a lender I've never heard of. A final notice on a home equity line I didn't sign. My name on the signature page - in handwriting that isn't mine.

against our house, opened a restaurant with his cousin, and watched it fail. The debt is $112,000. The house is leveraged at 94%. One missed payment and my sons lose their roof.

He doesn't know I found the letter. He thinks it's still in the pocket. He thinks the coat is still in the closet.
