My Horrible Family

Being a migrant is difficult. There is also so much emotional baggage from the home country and discrimination from the new homeland. However, being the child of a migrant is even harder. There is not only discrimination and the emotional baggage from parents, but also a new identity that is formed and scars of nationhood impressed upon as well. This not only creates anxiety but also a division of loyalties within the child. What happens when the ancestral homeland is winning in sports against the new naturalised country of birth? How does one deal with the rejection from both communities, never being seen as someone from the ancestral lands or the new country? How does one deal with being told home is somewhere else when the current country is all they have known? The rose-tinted outlook of "home" for the migrant can often shape the environment in which their child grows up. Whilst in some cases, it can create a worldly child that can cross borders; in other cases, it can often leave scars and trauma that are never dealt with. The confusing identity crisis that everyone deals with in life is forced early upon the young shoulders of third-culture children, unknown to their parents.
