This publication is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of Manuel María Ponce's Sonata III. The focus is on the formal structure of the work, in particular the sonata form of the first movement, as well as motivic-thematic connections and stylistic peculiarities. In addition, the history of the sonata's composition will be examined in the context of the collaboration between Manuel M. Ponce and Andrés Segovia. As an introduction, the structure of the sonata form is explained on the basis of classical guitar works, in particular the Sonata op. 15 by Mauro Giuliani, and placed in a historical context.
