Ce virus présente différentes particularités par rapport au VIH-1 : les patients infectés évoluent moins vite vers le SIDA, ont des charges virales plasmatiques plus faibles ainsi que des taux de transmissions plus faibles. Cependant, le VIH-2 tue autant que le VIH-1 chez les patients qui évoluent au stade SIDA. Le VIH-2 pose aussi d'important problčmes thérapeutiques : il est naturellement résistant ŕ un tiers des antirétroviraux actuellement commercialisés et présente plus de résistances croisées en cas d'échec virologique. La nouvelle classe antirétrovirale des anti-CCR5 n'avait encore jamais été évaluée pour l'infection par le VIH-2. Grâce ŕ ce travail les outils permettant l'identification du tropisme viral, et donc l'usage des anti-CCR5, ont été développé et la premičre preuve de l'efficacité in vitro des anti-CCR5 sur le VIH-2 a été apportée. Les anti-CCR5 offrent une nouvelle opportunité thérapeutique pour les patients infectés par ce virus.
