Knighton Memories

Saturday mornings in 1950s Knighton were rarely lazy for teenagers. Pocket money had to be earned, so each of the six friends worked before enjoying the weekend. George laboured from dawn in Felton's Bakery, delivering fresh bread around town despite the baker's constant demands. Daniel spent his Saturdays on his grandfather's farm at Panpwmton, finding satisfaction in honest work and quiet praise. Barry supposedly helped in his mother's café, although he preferred entertaining customers with wildly exaggerated stories rather than doing much work. Carol and Pauline worked hard at the Norton Arms Hotel, making beds, serving guests and sharing gossip, while Susan worked in the snack bar, discovering that real café life involved far more washing up than glamour. By lunchtime, wages were counted, giving them just enough money for fish and chips, records, the cinema or an afternoon of freedom.

That afternoon they gathered beneath the clock in Nelson Square, their regular meeting place. Daniel arrived first, calm and dependable as always, while George burst in on a borrowed bicycle, insisting he was only "testing the brakes." Barry appeared wearing newly purchased sunglasses and immediately claimed they had been given to him by a famous film producer. Pauline arrived late after daydreaming over photographs of film stars in Dennis Eastman's shop, convinced that one day someone famous would fall in love with her. Susan quietly tidied everyone's appearance, while Carol's booming laugh and quick wit ensured nobody's fantasies went unchallenged.

The friends wandered through Knighton's bustling streets, where every shop held familiar faces and memories. They passed Parkes Grocery, where Mrs Parkes seemed to know everyone's business, watched Tom Stephens patiently teaching nervous learner drivers, and peered into Hamers Grocery bustling with Saturday shoppers.

Their walk continued past Nicholls' Egg Packing Station, Miss Seabourne's clothing shop, Mr Majzak's boot repair workshop and The Fleece public house. Outside Grenville Jones' barber's, jokes flew about Brylcreem and hairstyles before they reached Ray Cuthbertson's famous fish and chip shop. Ray removed three chips from George's bag, too many he muttered." They passed the Golden Lion, the RAFA Club and Trillo's Grocery, each place sparking fresh memories, conversations and teasing.

The afternoon continued through the High Street, where they watched young Jimmy perform an unintentionally spectacular skid into Al Marriott's butcher's shop, sending sausages and chops flying in every direction before casually pretending it had all been deliberate. They then explored Prince's Ironmongers, where Daniel admired tools, Carol considered turning curtain rings into earrings, George contemplated placing drawing pins on Mr Naylor's chair, and Barry wondered if red gloss paint would make him look like a rock star.
As evening approached they sat together beneath the Clock Tower, watching shoppers drift past. Susan quietly remarked that one day she wanted to write down everything about Knighton-the shops, the people and the little details everyone took for granted-so future generations would know what the town had once been like. George dismissed the idea, insisting nothing would ever change and nobody would want to read about such ordinary things. His friends laughed at his lack of imagination, but Susan remained thoughtful. She had already seen enough change to realise that the ordinary moments of today would one day become precious memories. In many ways, her dream reflected the very purpose of preserving Knighton's history before it disappeared forever.
