Kanbun

A boy on a small island cannot speak. The words catch in his throat like fish bones, and the other children have learned to gather round and laugh. His grandfather, who plays an old three-stringed instrument in the doorway, teaches him the one thing that answers them: how to stand, barefoot on the earth, and breathe, and not run.

So begins the long road of Kanbun, who crosses the sea to a country whose language he cannot speak, and there, in a bare courtyard behind a flaking wall, meets a teacher who promises to show him not how to strike, but how to stand facing himself.

What follows is the story of a flawed man across the length of a life. Kanbun learns to be powerful, and discovers he likes it too much. He is offered love, and flees it, and dresses the flight in beautiful words. He takes a brilliant student he should have turned away, and pays a price he will carry, like a silent witness, until the end of his days. And late, far too late, he learns the thing his grandfather knew all along: that what we are given is never ours to keep, only to hand on, changed, to whoever comes after.

Spanning Okinawa, China, and the ruins of a war, Kanbun is a novel about fear and shame, about grief that will not close, and about the strange grace of being carried by everyone who stood before us. It is a book about becoming a human being, told in the language of a single stance held one breath longer than seems possible.
