Il meccanismo patogeno della sindrome dei punti bianchi (WSSV) nel gambero Procambarus clarkii attraverso lo studio delle attività delle cellule immunitarie correlate alla funzione immunitaria innata durante l'infezione, causata dal virus della sindrome dei punti bianchi (WSSV), che provoca perdite devastanti nell'allevamento dei gamberi. La proteina VP28 del WSSV può essere utilizzata come vaccino subunitario in grado di proteggere efficacemente i gamberi dalla malattia da WSSV. Per individuare le funzioni della VP28 e trovare un metodo per prevenire questa malattia nel gambero rosso di palude P. clarkii, abbiamo costruito il vettore plasmidico della pleVP28. L'infezione da WSSV ha causato una riduzione del numero e delle dimensioni o il danneggiamento di parti dell'epitelio branchiale e dei microvilli. Nel frattempo, i mitocondri hanno subito un cambiamento morfologico, con la diminuzione di parti delle creste e la formazione di grandi vacuoli. Inoltre, sono comparsi depositi elettrodensi e si sono osservati nuclei eterocromatinizzati nelle cellule del sangue con membrane nucleari rotte e fuoriuscita di nucleoplasma. Gli organi linfoidi dei gamberi hanno mostrato anomalie estese. Queste includevano cellule chiaramente necrotiche e cellule vacuolate con nuclei ipertrofici.
