In this study, differences, effective doses, andconcentrations of propofol and thiopental inhypnotic, analgesic, and EEG end-point wereevaluated. Nine rabbits, and 143 patients werestudied. In rabbits propofol revealed to be the bestchoice because recovery was rapid and breathingpatterns were well preserved. In humans propofolattenuated better the catecholamine response (CA) totracheal intubation (TI) than thiopental. The CAresponse to TI was almost totally blocked duringburst suppression pattern (BSP) of EEG induced bypropofol. At BSP level thiopental attenuated thecardiovascular response to TI nearly as well aspropofol. Remifentanil infusion started beforepropofol significantly reduced times and doses ofpropofol at the attainment of differrent endpoints.Remifentanil also affects the BIS value and might bekinetically useful for loss of consciousness becauseit accelerates the hypnotic onset of propofol.Propofol and thiopental have similarities in BSP butduring propofol 13-15 Hz spindle oscillations areseen. An algorithm for automatic detection of BSPwas developed.
