"A real thriller with local taste as edible as Chatham schrod."
-The Cape Cod Chronicle
SURF, TURF AND MURDER
Fisherman, diver and sometimes private detective Aristotle "Soc" Socarides is working the more placid side of his business when the first death at Quanset Beach shatters the calm of a Cape Cod summer: a Canadian tourist is savagely mauled to death in the ocean within sight of the lifeguards. Then the bloated, grinning corpses begin to wash up on the beach.
Soc might have called them isolated incidents if a local fisherman hadn't been telling stories about a strange creature in the water. And if a summer camp for kids-and its priceless oceanfront real estate-wasn't being pushed toward bankruptcy by bad publicity.
Soc is convinced that whatever is doing the killing at sea is tied to someone who wants to make a killing on land. But when an innocent man is murdered, a mysterious shipwreck is discovered, and some heavy hitters come after Soc with homicide on their minds, it's time to head out to sea-where the truth and his own worst demons await.
Paul Kemprecos is the author of nine novels in the Cape Cod-based Aristotle "Soc" Socarides private detective series. His debut book, Cool Blue Tomb, was awarded a Shamus by the Private Eye Writers of America for best original paperback. Shark Bait, the eighth book in the series, was nominated for the same award. He was the first series co-author to work with Clive Cussler and wrote eight best-selling NUMA Files novels in collaboration with the "Grandmaster of Adventure." In addition to stand-alone thriller Killing Icarus, he authored two adventure novels featuring Matinicus "Matt" Hawkins. The Minoan Cipher was nominated for a Thriller award by the International Thriller Writers. His short story, "The Sixth Decoy," appeared in two anthologies, Nothing Good Happens After Midnight, and "Best Mystery Stories of the Year, 2021, edited by Lee Child, along with literary luminaries Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates.
