"Son of Man" is the only self-designation employed by Jesus to describe himself in the gospels. However, the phrase is used in such a way that no particular theological significance can be determined. In early Christianity, the expression was interpreted as signifying Christ's human nature; later, "Son of Man" was thought to be a christological title in its own right. Contemporary scholarship, treating the term in the context of the original Aramaic of an historical Jesus, sees only a rhetorical device to refer to the one speaking.
