Estonia is easy to overlook on a map, with a population barely over 1.3 million and a footprint smaller than many countries barely notice. Yet beneath its forests, medieval streets and more than two thousand islands lies one of the most resilient national stories in Europe.

For centuries, Danish kings, German crusaders, Swedish monarchs and Russian emperors fought over this land. Armies marched across its fields, castles changed hands, and foreign rulers tried repeatedly to erase what made its people distinct. They never succeeded. Estonians kept their language, their traditions and their identity intact through seven centuries of foreign rule, a Soviet occupation that lasted nearly fifty years, and a peaceful Singing Revolution that showed the world what a nation determined to remain itself actually looks like.

Today Estonia is one of the most digitally advanced societies on Earth, its students among the best educated in Europe, its forests still home to wolves and bears, its song festivals still gathering a quarter of the population to sing as one.
