Noah Penrose came to Dalton to disappear politely.

A celebrated poet who can't write anything but elegies after losing his husband, Noah signs up for an extended residency at the Dalton Writers Retreat hoping quiet will numb the edges of grief. Instead, he meets Mel Richardson-Dalton's steady, soft-spoken animal rescue coordinator-along with a golden retriever who has opinions, a senior rescue dog with impeccable timing, and a town that refuses to let anyone fall apart alone.

Mel doesn't try to fix Noah. He simply shows up-bringing routines, warm coffee, night walks, and a kind of patience that doesn't demand Noah be "better" on anyone's schedule. As Noah begins to breathe again, attraction arrives quietly... and with it, the fear that wanting anything means losing it.
