"Her needs were timorous and her dreams ashen, but she was not fainthearted. She laughed loud on a joke, and her face would become radiant as if she had a treasure of happiness hiding inside. She would ask for a canvas cover for her boat or a few dresses for her children when winter approached. It had become my habit to check her bedding for her children once the winter chill from Dal Lake started causing frostbite on their tiny hands and feet.
