In 1983 in a small south Tipperary town two 18-year-old best friends leave school and take a tentative step into their future: Mary to study accountancy in a local college, Cathy to become an au pair in Brittany. For the following year they exchange long gossipy letters. The letters capture a moment in time. Through the course of the year we see the girls starting to grow up and to realise that the world is a more complex, more challenging and more exciting, place than they had imagined.
