By the time of his death, Herve Guibert (1955-1991) had become a singular literary voice on the impact of AIDS in France. He was prolific. His oeuvre contained some twenty novels, including A l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauve la vie (To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life) and Le protocolecompassionnel (The Compassion Protocol). He was 36 years old. In Cytomegalovirus, Guibert offers an autobiographical narrative of the everyday moments of his hospitalization due to complications of AIDS.
