Diogenes was the most visible and memorable face of Cynicism. In him, doctrine became gesture, anecdote, and scandal, as the stories of the barrel, the lamp with which he searched for "a human being," and the famous encounter with Alexander the Great show. Scandal was precisely his method, because Diogenes offended in order to reveal.
Taken together, the Cynics exposed social hypocrisy. A person is freer the less he needs, the less he fears, and the less he pretends -and this had to be lived, not argued. The nickname "dogs" ended up becoming part of their force: to live "like a dog" meant barking against hypocrisy, biting pretension, and showing that social chains hold mainly because no one decides to loosen them.
