Come ogni buona storia d'orrore questo libro fa paura, poi tranquillizza, e poi fa paura ancora. Il lupo mannaro, a differenza dell'aristocratico vampiro, ha tutte le caratteristiche del mostro popolare. La sua bestialitŕ raffigura un aspetto dell'uomo che č presente in tutti noi. Per questo i veri protagonisti di questo libro sono gli uomini aggrediti dal licantropo. Spesso, scrive O'Donnell, ci č impossibile reprimere la nostra bestialitŕ: lupi mannari una volta, lupi mannari per sempre. Sono loro i veri "mostri": una madre, troppo vanitosa e priva di ogni scrupolo di coscienza che, inseguita dai lupi non esita a gettare i figli nella neve. Un uomo che non crede per niente al soprannaturale ma si beve tutto quello che gli racconta la donna che ama. Lei lo ingannerŕ e gettandolo nelle fauci di un lupo mannaro, gli dirŕ: "Cosě adesso non crederai piů alle donne, ma almeno crederai nei lupi mannari".
