Butterfly

A boy who couldn't grow into his father's shoes. A man who couldn't outrun himself.

At the age of five, in a village in rural Zimbabwe, a small boy is handed a pair of polished black leather shoes by his father. They are too big for his feet, but he wears them anyway, trusting that one day he will grow into them.

He believes life is something you escape into. Beyond the confines of a small village lies a bigger world, and he is determined to find his place in it.

So he leaves.

What follows is a life measured in departures. Butterfly traces one man's restless search for the person he keeps almost becoming. From the dust roads of a Zimbabwean childhood to the glittering skyline of Johannesburg. From the misty mountains of Cape Town to the harbours of Sydney. He crosses borders in search of a life he can finally fit inside.

But no matter how far he travels, one presence follows him. Sarah. The girl beneath the jacaranda tree. The girl he called Butterfly, and the woman he has never quite been able to leave behind.

When a chance encounter at Dubai International Airport pulls the past into the present, and a single ordinary morning turns without warning into something that could take everything from him, he must confront the one person he has spent a lifetime trying to outrun: himself.
