In 1799, when East India Company scholar Francis Buchanan first recorded the name "Rooinga" along the misty estuaries of Arakan, he documented an indigenous identity deeply rooted in the fertile soil of the Naf River valley. Through repeated military clearance operations, Ismail and his son Zahir struggle to defend their home, guided by the sacred final words of their patriarch: "Never leave this soil."
As brutal violence engulfs Arakan once more in August 2017, the family faces its ultimate catastrophe.
