Before I Was Ready

Sixteen-year-old Nia thought she understood what fear felt like-until her mother said the words she never expected to hear: "It's breast cancer."

Suddenly, ordinary teenage life feels impossible. School keeps going. Friends keep texting. Homework is still due. But at home, everything has changed.

As Nia's mother moves through appointments, chemotherapy, surgery, side effects, recovery, and frightening moments of uncertainty, Nia struggles with questions she does not know how to ask. She searches the internet for answers, worries about losing her mother, gets angry, feels guilty for wanting her normal life back, and learns that loving someone with cancer does not mean she has to be strong every second.

Through friendship, family, honest conversations, tears, fear, and hope, Nia begins to understand something important: cancer may change a family, but it does not erase the love holding that family together.

Before I Was Ready is an emotional young-reader and teen novel about breast cancer from the perspective of a daughter who is old enough to understand the danger-but still young enough to desperately need her mom.
