Technology is advancing faster than at any point in human history, and the pace is only accelerating. Artificial intelligence is already reshaping how we work. Quantum computing, expected to be even more transformative, is next. Meanwhile, the laws and institutions meant to help society absorb these changes are struggling to keep up.
This book asks a direct question: what does a society owe the people caught in that gap? Its answer is a concrete, detailed proposal for a Universal Basic Income, built not on abstract idealism but on a working definition of what "enough" actually means. Enough to eat, to have shelter, to stay connected, to participate in society without fear, and nothing more. It's a floor, not a ceiling: security, not prosperity.
From that foundation, the book works through the questions any serious UBI proposal has to answer. Does it kill the incentive to work? How is it funded as automation shrinks the labor force it currently taxes? Can it be implemented without triggering runaway inflation? What happens to a person's sense of purpose once survival is no longer in question? Each chapter tackles one of these questions with a specific, arguable answer, drawing on real economic data, existing policy precedent, and evidence from basic income pilots already conducted around the world.
This is not offered as a finished, ready-to-legislate policy. It is a deliberately concrete starting point, built to be argued with rather than simply agreed with, in the hope of pulling a conversation that has largely stayed confined to economists and technologists out into the open, where it belongs. The author invites readers with more expertise and different perspectives, economists, policymakers, workers, and everyone in between, to challenge, refine, or dismantle the ideas here piece by piece.
The future described in these pages is coming quickly. This book doesn't claim to have solved it. It claims only to have started, seriously, the conversation society needs to have before it arrives.
