Corintha has lived for eighteen years on the island of Isla de las Madres, home to one of three Mer pods that dwell in the dangerous Southern Seas east of the mainland populated by human kingdoms. Corintha is seen alongside her friends Adila, Octavia, and other females as old enough to find a mate during the yearly mating season. A tradition she has found a loathsome fear inducing few months of courtship with the promising males coming home from exploring the seas and the human world.

But her plans to leave are dashed when Chief Iskar's son, Ares Silar, interrupts her escape attempt, and in doing so finds himself fascinated by her quick temper, sharp tongue, and the secrets of the painful memories she hides behind an unbreakable will. However, their dance of desire must be pushed aside when Corintha's brother, Lucas, is kidnapped by heinous pirates. Knowing the safety of their people now hangs by a thread, Ares, Corintha, and their closest friends set off on a daring rescue.
