More than a glimpse into one particular life, 51 Hours invites readers to walk beside Robert-and into questions they may recognize in their own lives.
"I spent most of my life believing silence protected everyone. Mostly, it imprisoned me."
- Robert Thibert
The title of 51 Hours comes from the fifty-one hours Robert spent in a San Francisco County Jail cell. Walking out left him carrying much of what he had carried in: shame, silence, questions, and ways of surviving learned long before anyone took away his freedom.
The more important questions emerged later: How had he learned to disappear in the first place? Who teaches us who we are allowed to become? What does silence protect, and what does it cost? What changes when we become curious about the stories we have mistaken for truth?
Moving through memory rather than chronologically, 51 Hours explores a life shaped by growing up gay in the 1970s and 1980s, family, friendship, love, marriage, HIV, addiction, careers, spirituality, recovery, music, and dance. Across decades, experiences that once seemed disconnected begin revealing relationships Robert had never fully recognized, challenging what he believed about himself, the people he loved, and the choices he made.
Told with candor, humor, tenderness, and an intentional use of white space that gives the writing a spoken, performative rhythm, 51 Hours embraces contradiction and questions without tidy answers.
