1915 Fire Insurance Maps and Atlas of Phoenix, Arizona

Facsimile of the 1915 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Phoenix, Arizona, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole capital city, from the business blocks, hotels and theatres of Washington Street, Adams Street and Central Avenue, the railroad depots, mills and lumber yards, out through the residential additions to the State Capitol in Capitol Park, the Arizona State Fair Grounds and its race track, Grand Avenue, the County Hospital and Poor Farm and the Arizona State Hospital for the Insane east of the city.

The seventy numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and offices along Washington Street, Adams Street, Jefferson Street, Central Avenue and First Avenue - the County Court House and Jail, the City Hall, the Federal Building and Post Office, the Carnegie Public Library in Library Park, the Chamber of Commerce Building, the National Bank of Arizona Building, the Water Users' Building, the Fleming and Goodrich blocks, the Noll and Walker buildings, the Columbia Theatre and the Elks' Club and Theatre, the Y. M. C. A. and Woman's Club buildings, and the Hotel Adams, Hardwick, Kersting, Vendome, Jefferson, Ford, Commercial, Annex and Phoenix hotels - through the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix freight and passenger depots and round house, the Phoenix Railway car barn, the city water works pumping station, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the U. S. Reclamation Service storage yard, the Phoenix and Valley flour mills, the Arizona Alfalfa Mill, the Phoenix Cotton Oil Company, the Arizona Orange Association packing house, Munger Brothers' olive oil and pickling works, the Arctic, Crystal, City and Constable ice plants, the creameries, the Phoenix and Arizona iron works and foundry, the Phoenix Cement Works, the Alhambra Brick and Tile Company, the Phoenix, Home Builders and Ryder planing mills, the O'Malley, Halstead and Valley lumber yards, the soap works, steam laundries and the wholesale meat company's slaughter house, to the State Capitol in Capitol Park, the Arizona State Fair Grounds with its race track and grand stand, the Armory, the Deaconess and St. Joseph's hospitals, the County Hospital and Poor Farm, the Arizona State Hospital for the Insane, the Monastery of the Franciscan Fathers, the site of Wesleyan University, the Phoenix Union High School, the Adams, Capitol, Central, Douglas, Fillmore, Garfield, Grant, Lincoln, McKinley, Monroe and Washington schools, St. Mary's Church and School, Trinity Pro-Cathedral, the First Baptist, Christian, Methodist and Presbyterian, Central Methodist, Grace and Second Baptist, Phillips Chapel and Mexican Methodist churches, and the residential streets along Roosevelt Street, Van Buren Street, Grand Avenue and the Salt River Valley Canal.

In 1915 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Phoenix for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the business district and the closer streets at fifty feet to the inch and the outer residential additions, the State Fair Grounds and Capitol Park at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
