Il ne s'agissait pas d'un ensemble réellement homogène, ni du point de vue de la culture matérielle, ni du point de vue linguistique. Que sait-on de leur cosmologie, de leur religion ? Encore trop peu de choses : ils n'ont eux-mêmes que peu écrit sur leurs rituels, et les auteurs grecs et romains n'ont conservé de leur mythologie que quelques infimes fragments.
