Ancient Mongolia is a vast land of sand, araucaria and ginkgo forests, swamps, and rivers ruled by dinosaurs big and small. Skin will burn in the sunlight and freeze in the moonlight. Sand will soak in the rainy season but become desert-dry in the dry season.

But, the most dangerous place of all is a quarry dug over generations by bizarre creatures who themselves believe are not from this land: humans. They are the most intelligent yet destructive species on Earth. They live in enormous villages and take care of animals, but use them in war against each other, exploiting their strengths in new ways. From cavalries of children that soar over deserts on the backs of flying giraffe-sized pterosaurs, to armies of explosive-carrying prison-guarding birds, to enormous herds of hadrosaurs that can each carry multiple people on their backs, the villages are at war for not just metal, but for the future of technology.
